How we got started.

 

AmpedBikes started as a hobby.

I own a cabinet shop (www.drayconstruction.com) and a couple years back I broke my knee pretty bad in a motocross accident and my physical therapist said I need low impact exercise for my knee so I chose to ride my mountain bike.

 

I'm 38 and not in perfect shape, my body is pretty beat up from being a carpenter for 20 years. I romanticized the memories of all day rides when I was a lot younger, but when it actually came down to it my body didn't react the way I remembered it ha-ha..

 

The hills seemed much steeper than they used to, the wind which did not bother me as a kid do now. So I set out to find a solution.

 

My first idea came while browsing EBay, I found a small gas motor that mounts in the center of the bicycle frame, it was a blast, but unfortunately absolutely no exercise and I did ride on the bike paths to the beach etc but it was too loud and people often gave me dirty looks.

 

So I went with a cheap low end electric hub motor, it was ok for about a month but I knew about the efficiency of Brushless motors from My RC plane days so I searched out brushless hubs, I went and rode every kit I could get my hands on and the only difference I saw in all of them was the price tag.

 

So I set out to find an inexpensive kit for my wife and I . I found Golden Motors at the time I didn't know any better and went ahead and bought a couple, liked them soo much that I bought a container of them from China and started selling them at just above cost as a hobby.

 

After toiling with them and realizing that the rim and spokes were not strong enough and would not hold up over time, not to mention the bad Chinese business tactics.

 

So I set out to create my own kits. I made a few trips to China and found a company that were willing to build a kit to my specifications, using the parts I chose. So now we offer a very high end and hearty kit that should last a lifetime.

 

I still do it on the side so I can still offer much lower prices for higher quality kits than just about anyone out there,
